THE ROMA

THE ROMA

Roma is a nation which can be found in many parts of the World. The nation is know by this name in Balkans, Europe, and some Asian and African countries.

They are to be found in American and Australian continent as well but we know that they derive from the Balkans, Asian and European countries.

Roma are also called with different names which we will tackle further in the text, but let us see what the word Roma means.

The word Roma is the plural of the word Rom which has many meanings, for example: Husband, faithful, mature, Roma (plural), Roma (the name of the nation)…

This nation speaks its own language, Romane, a language that is a mother tongue of Roma. But in many places it is believed that some nations are not called Roma and do not speak Romane, but however are considered among those who speak Romane and call themselves Roma.

Roma, in every part where they live are not locals, they came from different places. Therefore the greatest enigma, as before, as now in the 21st century are Roma, and there is still no clear evidence how did they dispersed throughout the World.

Many people wrote about Roma and their origin from India, but this is said just because of the language which is a group of Indo-European language.

As a Roma, who really wants to know the origin of Roma, I am not satisfied with such conclusion and I think there should be a broader research on this.

We can’t say that a certain nation comes from a certain country simply because in such country there are poor people, and people who enjoy the nomadic way of life.

In the World there are many countries having poor people and people living a nomadic life, but it is known that they are not Roma. If we see the early life, then we may see that lots of people lived a nomadic life. Even today, there are many people having a nomadic life, but we can’t say they are Roma. Therefore we cannot say that Roma derive from India, because the Romani language belongs to Indo-Aryanian group of language (this group is a branch of Indo-Iranian languages and the Indo-Iranian language is part of Indo-European languages).

Until today were given many theories and thoughts assuming that Roma derived from India.

None of these given theories do not clearly state that Roma derived from India. All assume that during the period of war, Roma left their place and looked for better place to live in other countries of the World.

As Romani language belongs to the family of Indo-European languages, therefore India is taken as the place where Roma came from!

Reading about all the wars that took place until today, as from the Dravidians war with Aryans 2000 years BC (this war lasted more than 1000 years resulting with the loss of Dravidians in the year of 900 BC).

Persian King Darius I (516 BC), Alexander the Great (327-325 BC), Arabs (712 BC) Afghanistan King Mahmut Gazni (998-1030 BC), Mongolians (Tamerlane, 13.-14. BC), do not indicate that in India they found a nation named Roma that they expelled them from India. As known since then, even today in India there is no nation called Roma and there is no nation in India having Romani language as a mother tongue.

Nowadays in India some nomads are called as Gypsies, but if we consider the period when these nomads started to be called as gypsies we may see that the word was taken from English language after 1661 when Britain conquered India (Mumbai).

A great group of nomads in India, called Banjarya, nowadays want their rights to be respected as do the Roma in Europe and other parts of the World. This nation says that they are also Roma as the Roma in Europe and other parts of the World.

The Banjarya which are called as gypsies do not speak Romane and they claim so because of the nomadic life they live and they adopt the language depending on the place they settle and live. This nation counting around 60 millions in India, says that they lost the language by living the nomadic life.

In contrary, our Roma in Balkans and Europe say just because they lived the nomadic life they preserved the language, and then you may ask, how is the language best preserved?!

There are opinions that the Banjarya gone in India from Egypt and are believed to be part of Jewish that came to India from Persia ( Trinkit Hunter > Cultural Groups > Banjara People). However this must be investigated and clarified.

A very important question arises when we hear that Romani left India after the war and dispersed to other parts of the World, we may ask, why didn’t the Romani from the surrounding places of India escape as well? As for example, we haven’t heard that there are Roman in China, Nepal, Butan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka etc... , places very close to India.

These theories concerning Roma are also stated in old legends, fairytales, religions, etc. but none takes these stories seriously and give some clarifications, which may be true, rather than leaving many questions in our minds. Therefore I think that we must compare old and new stories and statements in order to come to the final conclusion.

We will further elaborate to see how the scientists evaluate, when a certain nation may be more precisely considered to belong to a certain country. In our examples, all scientists believe that our language is more close to Indian (Sanskrit) which belongs to Indo-European group of language and therefore conclude that Roma derive from India.

Me as a Roma, I believe other Roma as well, as well as non Roma, who are interested in this topic, are eager to know: Where does the name Indo-European language come from, who speaks these languages, and where did these languages derive from? Therefore we will firstly elaborate this question and further focus on other issues.
